The first earthquake with a magnitude 8.1 occurred on September 7 in southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
The temblor – felt by about 50 million people across the country - was the strongest Mexico has experienced in 100 years. It left about 100 people dead. On September 19 a second quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale caused serious damage and loss of life to Mexico City and surrounding states. At least 366 died. About 40 buildings in Mexico City have collapsed, with another 45 in danger of falling. The latest earthquake, on September 23, rocked southern Mexico and measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, but damage was minimal.
