Geir O. Kløver, Director of the Fram Museum, Leonid Surguchev, Managing Director at LUKOIL Overseas North Shelf AS, and Svetlana Ozhegova, Charge d’affaires of the Russian Embassy, participated as guest speakers at the opening event.

“The exploration of the Northwest Passage is well known, but the exploration of the Northeast Passage and the Russian Arctic is less known in this part of the world. Even less known here are the Russian explorations of their own country,” Mr. Kløver said.

The exhibition includes information about more than 40 different expeditions, pictures of famous explorers, maps showing the expeditions routes and illustrations providing examples of ships and equipment used during the explorations and their discoveries.

“This project would not have been possible without the financial support of LUKOIL, which also assisted us in reaching an agreement with the Russian Geographical Society regarding illustrations,” he added.

“We are very happy to assist the famous Norwegian Fram Museum to open an interesting permanent exhibition about the 1000-year history of exploration in the Russian Arctic showing international cooperation and competition, victories and tragedies and the heroism of brave polar explorers,” Mr. Surguchev said.

The opening reception was attended by representatives of the embassies of the Russian Federation, France, Canada, UK, USA, Germany, members of Nansen, Amundsen, Sverdrup and Wisting polar explorers' families and the Fram Foundation and Council. Representatives of academia, industry and international oil and service companies were also in attendance, as well as the main sponsors of the Fram Museum: the Olso-based DNV GL certification body, Kvaerner engineering and construction services company and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
